Warnings of the end of the world being nigh are back again. The last occasion for such worries was for the millennium. Scholars believed that the beginning of the year 2000 was to bring about the end of the world by cataclysmic disaster.

As January first went without a hitch, the focus was pushed onto May the fifth of the same year, but again, the end of the world did not come about. After much consideration, it was discovered that in fact, mistakes had been made with the calculations and the end of the world was actually scheduled for December, 2012.

Why December 21 2012?

The Mayans devised four different calendars for different uses. The Long Count calendar dated back to the very beginning of today’s world age. Just as there are days, weeks, months, years and so on, the Mayans had different time periods of certain significance. December 21 2012 marks the end of the thirteenth baktun. Each baktun is the equivalent to around 394 years and there are said to be thirteen baktuns to each world age.

Authors on the subject have written about this event for years, claiming that the Mayans would place great importance on this day. Movies have been made about such happenings; Armageddon, and of course 2012, which is actually based on these very ideas.

It is said that there will be a number of alignments which will give way to the end of the world. It seems that this assumption has been combined with what we know about the solar system, including any dangers out there and there is a hybrid notion on the Mayans predicting an event such as Earth colliding with a huge asteroid or planet.

Arguments Against

Strong as the opinions are of those who believe in this doomsday, there are those who have studied the Mayan Long Count Calendar, as well as the ancient civilization and offered their opinion that there is no sign at all that the Mayans would be concerned with the end of the thirteenth baktun. In fact, some experts say that the calendar simply continues on to the next set baktun, just as the millennium year of 2000 continued on twelve years ago.

There are those who believe that the December 21 2012 will actually bring about the end of an era and lead to positive changes in the world, rather than a catastrophic annihilation of the planet.

All is Explained

The Mayan Council have come together to aid the filming of a documentary to explain the so called 2012 prophecy. Producer of the documentary Raul Julia-Levy claims that the stories and discoveries of Mayan culture which have been shared with the world by archeologists are either lies or mistakes. The full meaning of the Long Count calendar shall be explained apparently, along with a calming message that there is no need to worry about the end of the world happening by way of some terrible disaster this December. It will happen gradually over the next couple of decades so people have plenty of time to prepare.
